WATERS'19 is a satellite workshop of ECRTS'19. The goal of the International Workshop
on Analysis Tools and Methodologies for Embedded and Real-time Systems (WATERS) is to
create a common ground and a community to share methodologies, software tools, best
practices, data sets, application models, benchmarks and any other way to improve
comparability of results in the current practices of research in real-time and embedded
systems.
Focus of this year:
This year, WATERS will focus on "Modeling and Performance Analysis of High-performance
Computing Platforms".
This topic is gaining importance in the real-time community as the integration trend and
increased required computing power is currently driving the adoption of common embedded
consumer devices into the safety-critical domain. These platforms include heterogeneous
Multi-Processor Systems-on-Chip (MPSoCs) integrating general-purpose microprocessors and
accelerators such as GPUs, previously restricted to the high-performance computing domain.
Multiple hardware features including micro-architecture choices, shared resources, inter-
connects, and memory hierarchy are therefore becoming a dominant performance factor that
tremendously challenges established methodologies and tools in the real-time systems
community. Therefore, a proper understanding, modeling and benchmarking of the important
HW/SW features that influence performance in high-performance computing platforms is
currently required.
The goal of this year's edition at WATERS is to bring together researchers and practitioners
from academia and industry working in the fields of real-time systems, design automation
and HW/SW co-design in order to discuss current and emerging methodologies for modeling
and performance analysis of high-performance heterogeneous platforms.
WATERS Industrial Challenge 2019:
--------------------------------
The topic of this year will be supported by an industrial challenge proposed jointly by
Robert Bosch Gmbh and the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
The industrial challenge addresses the design and integration of recent automotive systems
where expressive performance models capturing the heterogeneity of the hardware-software
system are needed. The WATERS industrial challenge addresses one example in this context,
where the processing power offered by GPUs and their capability to execute parallel
workloads is exploited to execute and accelerate applications related to advanced driver
assistance systems.
The challenge description contains the following information:
- A primer on NVIDIA TX2 platform with focus on CPU–GPU interactions, scheduling,
memory model, and offloading mechanisms as basis for performance modeling in Amalthea
- A brief description of the challenge questions
- A description of the considered application
- A description of utilized Amalthea performance modeling approaches suitable for the
description of the software and hardware parts including their interaction for the
given challenge.

Submission Format:

we welcome to WATERS'19 two types of contributions:
- Solutions to the industrial challenge: authors of accepted submissions will have the
opportunity to give a short talk during that session and present their solution
to the audience during the interactive demo session.
- Submissions for a talk at WATERS 2019 are welcome, position papers and problem statements elaborating
challenges in particular in relation with this year's topic "Modeling and Performance Analysis of
High-performance Computing Platforms" are also welcome.
A short abstract (min 1 page - max 6 pages) IEEE conference format is to be submitted
by the deadline. For accepted solutions to the industrial challenge, a submission up to
6 pages of the final version of the full solution will be required.
