Research Papers

ICST 2020 invites high quality submissions in all areas of software
testing, verification, and validation. Papers for the research track
should present novel and original work that pushes the
state-of-the-art in software testing, verification, and
validation. Case studies and empirical research papers are also
welcome.

Topics of interest include, but is not limited to, the following:

- Fuzz testing
- Manual testing practices and techniques
- Search based software testing
- Security testing
- Model based testing
- Test automation
- Static analysis and symbolic execution
- Formal verification and model checking
- Software reliability
- Testability and design
- Testing and development processes
- Testing education
- Testing in specific domains, such as mobile, web, embedded,
  concurrent, distributed, cloud, GUI and real-time systems
- Testing for learning-enabled software, including deep learning
- Testing/debugging tools
- Theory of software testing
- Empirical studies
- Experience reports

Each submission will be reviewed by at least three members of the ICST
Program Committee.  Papers that have a strong industrial/practical
component and focus more on impact rather than (technical) novelty are
encouraged to consider the industry track instead.

Industry track

The industry track has the same topics and requires the same
rigorousness as the research track. However, the industry track papers
should prioritize impact and realism over novelty. We expect that
industry track publications report useful testing tools, successful
stories and experiences when applying software testing theories and
methodologies into practice, or promising prototypes that have the
potential to impact practice in the next few years. Ideally they
should be evaluated on real-world, industrial data, and discuss
non-functional aspects such as scalability and reliability, and also
compare to pre-existing industrial best practices. The industry track
papers will be published in the ICST 2020 proceedings and listed by
IEEE databases.

Testing Tools track

The Tools Track seeks to bridge the gap between research and practice,
focusing on software testing, verification, and validation. Its main
goal is to advance both the state of the art and the state of the
practice. The Tools Track invites submissions that describe tools at
several stages of maturity, including promising research prototypes,
widely used research tools, and commercial tools. A Tools Track
submission should clearly describe the complexity of the addressed
problem, solved technical challenges, and possibilities for technology
transfer into practice. Researchers are welcome to submit papers that
describe novel approaches and how these approaches support tool
developers in solving challenging problems. Moreover, this track seeks
non-academic submissions to foster discussions between researchers and
practitioners.

Tool Demos track

In addition to the tool track papers, ICST 2020 will also be accepting
submissions of demonstrations of testing-related tools and
prototypes. The goal is to provide a highly interactive session where
researchers and practitioners can experiment and discuss their
tools. Demonstrations provide an opportunity to communicate how a
scientific approach has been implemented or how a hypothesis has been
assessed, including details such as implementation and usage
challenges, data models and representations, APIs for tool and data
access. A demonstration should focus on novel aspects of early
prototypes or mature tools. It must clearly communicate the following
information to the audience:

- The software testing challenges it proposes to address.
- The envisioned users and the presumed methodology for these users.
- The results of validation studies already conducted for mature
  tools, or the design of planned studies for early prototypes.

Posters track

The ICST Poster Track provides an opportunity for researchers and
practitioners to present, show-case, and discuss their most recent
advances, ideas, experiences, and challenges in the field of software
testing, verification and validation. Poster submissions are intended
to stimulate discussion on recent advances, experiences, and
challenges, as well as cutting-edge or potentially disruptive ideas,
in the field of software testing, verification and validation. The
scope of the Poster Track includes novel ideas or visions of the
future, industrial experiences, and early results related to research
and practice of software testing, verification and validation.

Doctoral Symposium

The symposium invites Ph.D. students at all stages of their studies,
from first-year students to those ready for their final dissertation
defense. The symposium requires each student to write a short research
summary describing the problem that will be tackled in the Ph.D., some
key results (if any), potential plan of the Ph.D. The student will
present her/his work at the symposium. After the presentation,
students will receive oral feedback from a panel of researchers and
practitioners. Students may also seek advice on topics such as how to
perform research in testing, how to design and execute empirical
research, write scientific papers, and eventually prepare for the
defense itself. Accepted research summaries will be published in the
conference proceedings.

How to Submit

Full Research Papers as well as Industry papers must conform to the
two-column IEEE conference publication format. Templates for LaTeX and
Microsoft Word are available from
https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html : please
use the `letter` format template and `conference` option.

Papers should be submitted in the PDF format: they must not exceed ten
pages, plus up to two pages of references. Submissions will be handled
via EasyChair https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=icst2020.

 Double Blind

The research track for ICST 2020 will employ a double-blind review
process. Thus, no submission may reveal its authors’ identities. The
authors must make every effort to honor the double-blind review
process. In particular, the authors’ names must be omitted from the
submission and references to their prior work should be in the third

New in 2020

Submissions must supply all information that is needed to replicate
the results, and therefore are expected to include or point to a
replication package with the necessary software, data, and
instructions. Reviewers may consult these packages to resolve open
issues. There can be good reasons for the absence of a replication
package, such as confidential code and/or data, the research being
mostly qualitative, or the paper being fully self-contained. If a
paper does not come with a replication package, authors should comment
on its absence in the submission data; reviewers will take such
comments into account.
